Metal Casting Technologies & Processes

SAND CASTING

Mold halves made b y packing tempered sand onto wood or metal pattern halves. Mold halves are removed from pattern, assembled with or without cores, and metal is poured into resultant cavitites.

INVESTMENT CASTING

Metal mold makes wax or plastic replica. These are sprued, then surrounded with investstement material, baked out, and mteal poured in resuiltant cavity.

CENTRIFUGAL CASTING

Molten metal is poured into a rapidly spinning cylindrical steel mold coasted with mold wash and capped with removable end plates. After controlled chilling the resulting tube is poured from the mold for subsequent processing.

FABRICATION

Fabrication is the process of creating a product from individual parts.

FORGING

Forgings are not susceptible to cavities, cold pour problems, porosity or shrinkage. Castings typically require more expensive alloys to achieve the high strength required for most fittings.

POWDER METAL

Metal powder is compressed in die barrel between moving upper and lower punces. Lower punch ejects part, which is then sintered, and sized if close tolerance is required.

HEAT TREATMENT

Heat treatment is a process where the castings are heated to a predetermined temperature at a controlled rate, to achieve the desired structural changes.

FINISHING

Casting finishing is the process of taking cooled, molded cast assemblies and preparing them for use. Depending on the process used, (nobake, green sand, investment, etc.) the castings will require various levels of finishing. The type of metal cast also plays a part in the finishing process.

RESIN SHELL MOLD

Cope and Drag Method. Resin-coated sand is poured onto hot metal patterns, curing into bonded sand shell mold halves. These are removed from pattern, assembled with or without cores, and metal is poured into resultant cavities.

DESIGN & MATERIAL CONSULT

Have the experts design and assist on metal alloy and process selection to achieve the functional requirements for your process.

SINGLE/PROTOTYPE

Numerous technologies are available to create a prototype or single piece casting for special products.

PERMANT MOLD

Molten metal is gravity poured into cast iron or steel molds, coated with ceramic mold wash. Cores can be metal, sand, resin shell.
